FIRE RAZES ORPHANAGE IN ALASKA Tallapoosa's Crew Battles Flames in Church Building on Northern Isle; Cause Not Given in Advices Battling flames which destroyed the Baptist orphanage at Woody Island, Kodiak, Alaska, last night, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Tallapoosa rescued seventy-eight children who were endangered by the flames. Word of the fire and the rescue was received this afternoon by the Seattle headquarters of the Coast Cause of the fire was not contained in the brief messages picked up here. The Coast Guard crew, helpless to save the main building of the orphanage, kept flames from the power house and water storage plant and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses, the messages said. None of the children or supervisors at the orphanage was injured, the radio dispatches said. Loss of life and injuries were believed averted by the fact that the Tallapoosa was at Woody Island when the fire broke out and the crew was on hand immediately to battle the blaze.
