Summary:Flames Destroy Famous Gold Town. FLAMES DESTROY FAMOUS GOLD TOWN -- This is the first Photograph showing the flames actually burning Nome, Alaska, September 17. It was taken by A. C. Grabbert, Kelso, Wash., a dentist who had gone to the famous gold city to prospect during the summer. He had to run seven miles up the Arctic beach to make the pictures. All of his personal effects were burned in the Golden Gate hotel, where the fire started. The photo shows the flames eating at two buildings on the right.
