Fire Left Nothing of These Nome Buildings hut Heaps of Smoking Ashes Ashes are all that remain of Nome's main street, which is shown in this picture. Fire swept through the historic Alaska gold camp on Monday, destroying a majority of the business and residential buildings. Nome's two restaurants were in the block at the left of the picture. The office of the famous Nome Nugget newspaper was in the second building from the right. The picture was taken in 1925 by Matthew F. Murphy, now with the Washington Water Power company.
