Summary:Food For Eskimos On Rim Of Arctic: Natives Starving And Reindeer Killed By Wolves, Say Reports To Federal Officials. FOOD FOR ESKIMOS ON RIM OF ARCTIC Natives Starving and Reindeer Killed by Wolves, Say Reports to Federal Officials. Juneau, Alaska, Aug. 7—(/P)—Food supplies were ordered sent to northern Alaska today from Seattle after Barrow officials apparently lacked sufficent food to aid Eskimos on the arctic rim who were reported facing starvation. Acting territorial Gov. E. W. Griffin radioed officials in Seattle to load supplies abroad the steamer Yukon which sails Sunday for southeastern Alaska. He said the supplies would be transferred from the Yukon to the steamer North Star at Seward for arctic points. He said if the situation became acute he would order the supplies flown to the arctic. Wolves Kill Reindeer Governor Griffin said he had received a message from Reindeer Supt. Frank Daughtery at Barrow, northern-most Alaskan settlement, which said in part; "If conditions have been as bad along the arctic rim during the winter (which lasts six months and ended about a month ago) as in the Point Barrow area, the natives must have undergone terrible hardships." Apparently he referred to his recent report of reindeer slaughter by wolves. Governor Griffin said he received a message from Capt. C. D. Peterson, veteran arctic trader, that some of the natives in the Herschel and Barter Island regions were in a serious weakened condition and that their reindeer were dying because of lack of Peterson said he had given away all of his ship's supplies that could be spared.
