ESKIMOS LEAD IN DOG DERBY NOME, Alaska, April 1. (/P)— Mushing at an approximate 13-mile-an-hour clip despite a biting north wind, Albert Johnson, an Eskimo driver from White mountain, won the first 26-mile lap to Cape Nome and return today in 1 hour 56 minutes. In second place was Fred Topkok, an Eskimo from Igloo, who was timed in 1 hour 58 minutes 4 seconds. They led the 11 dog derby teams competing for $600 in cash prizes in one of the principal features of Nome's third annual fair, dedicated to exploitation of northwestern Alaska products. Others "in the money" on the basis of the first day's race over the course, . to be duplicated the next two days, were: Edwin Punguk, White Mountain, 2:00.5; Ernie Buckmaster, Nome, 2:07.20, and Harry Kagoonuk, Teller, 2:12.10.
