WATCH IN VAN FOR MATTERN Nome Thinks Message Must Have Been Garbled in Transit. NOME, Alaska, July 18. CP)—Weary citizens who watched the skies last night and today for a soviet plane reported carrying Jimmie Mattern from Anadyr, Siberia, decided tonight there must have been something wrong about the vague report. They said they would try to reach Anadyr again late tonight by wireless. There was no worry about the American flyer who was forced down in Russia while trying to circle "the top of the world," as he was due to leave Anadyr in a seaplane, and since Russian wireless reports have always been doubtful under the existing set-up. Last night's report merely said Mattern was expected to land here at 6 p. m. Nome time. The message might have been "bootlegged" from the soviet wireless at Anadyr or elsewhere, or might have come from a ship, and been garbled in relaying.
