ONE DEAD, 3 HURT IN PLANE Pilot splints His Broken Leg and Starts on Pontoon for Aid. KETCHIKAN, Alaska, May 4. (UP)— Failing to gain altitude when taking off from Karta lake, 50 miles inland from here, a monoplane piloted by James Dodson crashed last night, killing Steve Selig, prominent cannery and fish trap man, and injuring Dodson and two other men. Dodson, whose leg was broken, managed to pull the men out of the plane to the beach, hack off a pontoon and place his leg in a splint. He had started to paddle the pontoon down the lake for aid when Pilot Gene Meyhing sighted the disabled plane.
