(/P)—Tanana river ice, motionless at Nenana, eliminated at least 80,000 of 100,000 guesses today from the Nenana pool, but left 20,000 forecasts on the day, hour and minute of the spring breakup still in the running. Observers at Nenana said they believed the breakup time might even exceed for lateness the 20-year record of 1:32 p. m., May 15, 1935. But today was considered an auspicious day because four times in the 20 years the ice broke on May 11. Among those who pinned their hopes on the ice going today were Oscar Neilson of Anchorage, winner of last year's contest, and Ben F. Gillette of Nome. Both entered guesses that the ice would break at 11:01 a. m. Text Nome Alaska Washington State University: WSU Libraries Digital Collections Anchorage Fairbanks Pacific
