ICE BREAKS UP, LUCKY GUESSER TO GET $61,000 JUNEAU, Alaska, May 15. (/P) -- Later this spring than at any previous time" in the past 32 years, the ice was moving today in the Tanana river front on Fairbanks — and all Alaska was wondering who would win a $61,000 "guessing contest." The ice moved, signaling the definite arrival of spring along the Yukon and its great tributaries at 5:01 p. m. yesterday in the Chena Slough in front of Fairbanks, a message from there said. It meant only one thing to Alaska residents far and wide, including many ex-Alaskans in the states. Within 24 to 48 hours, or possibly a few hours more, the ice will also begin to break up at Nenana, 50 miles west of here, also on the Tanana. For months, Alaskans have been guessing at the exact time of the breakup. To the winner will go a prize which this year totals $61,600. In 1929 $70,000 was the prize.
