MORRIS SPENT HELPFUL TIME PATROL DUTY Based At Unalaska, Seward's Cutter Cared For Sick. An interesting and helpful 3-months' summer Westward patrol ended for the USCG Morris when the patrol cutter under command of Lieut. A. J. Carpenter, docked at Seward 10 p.m. Saturday. Based at Unalaska, the Morris made frequent trips along the Alaska and Aleutian peninsulas called to various canneries on account of illness and accidents. One of the last and saddest trips, was to Chignik, where A. H. Hutte, Seward fisherman, was taken aboard for transfer to the hospital at Unalaska. Fell From Dock. A fractured spine, resulting in paralysis, was suffered by Mr. Hutte when he fell from the cannery dock on July 4. He has children in Seward, wards at Jesse Lee Home. En route to Seward, the Morris stopped at Lazy bay, Kodiak isle, and brought from there Gordon Oakland for treatment at the Seward General Hospital. Week of the patrol was given to the Ales Hrdlicka party of scientists, a striking discovery on a visit to Chirnofski island being made by J. J. DeCarlo, chief engineer, when he stumbled upon a bruial cave of aboriginal Alaskans, Dr. Hrdlicka was elated over the find, according Mr. DeCarlo full credit with abundant thanks. Some rough weather, but not too much nor too severe, reported Lieutenant Carpenter. Transferred. Engineer DeCarlo takes transfer to the 165-foot Calypso, based at San Diego. Mrs. DeCarlo is there waiting for him. He will be succeeded on the Morris by Carlton Legg. They are old buddies. Peter Miller temporary executive officer goes south on the SS Mount McKinley tonight. Mr. Miller will travel out on the USCG Ingham, bound from Westward in about 10 days. The Morris will put out to meet the big cutter, going to Cordova to return with new motor deck boat. Trip to Seattle is tentatively planned for October. Text Kodiak Alaska Washington State University: WSU Libraries Digital Collections Lazy Bay ENVELOPE(-57.748,-57.748,51.467,51.467) Pacific |
