BISHOP OF ALL, OUTDOORS Back in 1895—before the gold rush—the Rev. Peter Trimble Rowe started a career in Alaska as "the "bishop of all outdoors." On foot he mushed over the northern wastes. He whipsawed lumber to make crude boats. He drove dog teams. It took him 14 months to cover his . territory, visiting forgotten camps, holding services in tundra towns, cheering the living, comforting the dying. For 40 years the good bishop labored. A few days ago he was honored at ceremonies in New York. At the age of 79, still hale and hearty, he was surrounded by church dignitaries and men he had worked with in the great all-outdoors that was, and is, his parish. Earlier this year, Bishop Rowe made a jubilee tour of the circuit around which he once mushed and drove and poled a boat. He made it by plane, in less than eight hours. And he says in future that's the way he's going to cover his territory. The faster he can move, the more work he can do. Everyone in the north, every old sourdough "outside," knows and loves Bishop Rowe. And not one but hopes that he will be spared for many years to fly over the territory he knows so well and for the humanity for which he labored for 40 strenuous years. --Seattle Star.
