ALASKA PLAYS IN MIDNIGHT SUN. FAIRBANKS, Alaska. Saturday, July 4.—G5>>—Fairbanks' Fourth of July celebration opened last night under the rays of the midnight sun, with midnight baseball and a boxing tournament. The Northland championship baseball game was scheduled for today, between the sailors from the U. S. Coast Guard cutter Haida, who arrived by plane from Cordova this morning, and the Fairbanks Miners. Fairbanks Goes Swimming Scores of Fairbanks residents went swimming in nearby Lake Harding to escape from the heat wave, now in its fourth week. The first native garden products, including strawberries, were on the market today. At Anchorage the cornerstone of Anchorage's new $100,000 city hall was laid as a part of the city's Fourth of July festivities. The Tacoma Chamber of Commerce Alaska good will party arrived at Cordova today, in the midst of Cordova's Fourth of July celebration. Cordova Is Overcast The day was cloudy and overcast, but residents prepared for a water carnival tomorrow at Lake Eyak, warmed by a long hot Spell. At Nome Eskimos dominated the Fourth of July celebration with kayak and oomiak (skin boat) races, wrestling events and a contest to see how high they could kick with both feet. A large number of tourists were on hand for the observance. The temperature remained in the 80's today, after setting an all-time high mark of 83.8 degrees yesterday. A few residents spent $30 each to take a nonstop flight over Cape Siberia.
