In Alaska. C. C. C. in Alaska THE current inspection of Alaskan activities by Robert Fechner, national director of emergency conservation work, serves an important double service. It emphasizes the value of the Civilian Conservation Corps, now under attack by hostile Eastern out the varied problems in congress. At the same time it points out the varied problems in which Alaska still requires the aid of the federal government. Work that CCC youths, whites, Indians and Eskimos, are now doing in Alaska under an expanded program, includes such diverse items as building landing fields for airplanes and night shelter cabins for dogsled travelers; preservation of primitive Indian houses, totem poles and other relics; protection of game and wild life, in some sections because it provides food for natives and in others because these regions may be developed as meccas for visiting sportsmen. Mr. Fechner's tour of inspection will help to acquaint him with Alaskan problems affecting a wide range of governmental departments. Alaska's friends will hope that his visit will mean, not only the continued work of CCC enrollees, but the launching of a program broad enough to include more of the territory's needs.
