description Business News And Views: Alaska Area Salmon Packing Rapidly Swinging Into Stride. BUSINESS NEWS and Views. By H. W. Margeson Alaska Area Salmon Packing Rapidly Swinging Into Stride SALMON packing for the 1936 season is getting into its stride, according to figures of the Bureau of Fisheries, prepared by the Association of Pacific Fisheries and the Northwest Salmon Canners' Association. In the weekly comparative pack progress report a total of 574,118 cases were packed in the weeks ending July 4 and June 27, those for the latter date covering three of the more remote packing areas, Bristol Bay with 90,445 cases, Copper River with 70,487 cases and Cook Inlet with 14,653 cases. For the week ending July 4 the standings of the various districts were as follows: Alaska Peninsula, south side, 328,294 cases; Kodiak, 78,048; Chingnik, 66,012, South Prince of Wales, 10,302; Yakutat, 8,551; Alaska Peninsula, north side, 7,326. Widest divergences in the week's pack this year, as compared with the same period in 1935, were shown in Chingnik, 66,012 against 29,183 cases last year; Kodiak, 78,048 against 119,218 last year; and Copper River, 70,487 against 8,439 last year. No corresponding reports for the comparative periods were at hand for Bristol Bay, Peninsula south side, Cook Inlet and South Prince of Wales. Differences were slight in Yakutat and Peninsula north side. GROWTH IS RAPID. THREE years after they were authorized by Congress, 1,118 federal savings and loan associations were in operation on June 13 in forty-four states and in one territorial possession, it is announced by the Federal Home Loan Band Board. Associations increased in number in that period from 59 to 1,118 and assets increased from $393,160 to $618,161,783. Shareholders number more than 600,000 persons. Only nine of the states have more associations than has Washington with its 37. Missouri is tied with the same number. The leading states, rated as to number of associations operating, are: Texas, 88; Ohio, 81; Illinois, 80; California, 56; New York, 53; Florida, 47; Indiana, 41; Georgia, 39, and Tennessee, 38. TREND IS UPWARD. THE glass industry has regained most of the ground lost during the depression and apparently is headed for one of the best years in its history, according to a survey by Mackubin, Legg & Co., national distributors of Fundamental Investors, Inc. With plate plass output in May reaching a new monthly high and recording an increase of 31.6 percent over the comparable 1936 month, the total for the first five months was up 15.6 percent over a year ago. For the first four months glass container output was up 16 percent and general glassware up 8.5 percent. TAX SURVEY A SPECIAL report, summarizing salient features of the new tax bill as it applies to corporations has been prepared and is being distributed by Grande, Stolle & Co.
