Rotary Club Would Teach Totem Carving to Indians Special to The Christian Science Monitor KETCHIKAN, Alaska — The Ketchikan Rotary Club has become interested in having courses initiated in Alaskan schools to teach wood carving, thus enabling Indians to carve curios, such as small totem poles, for sale to tourists. In the past, most of the miniature totems—copies of authentic northwest Indian art—have been manufactured in Seattle or Japan, and sold in Alaska to the tourists from all over the world. Last year, the Indian school in Ketchikan undertook to help boys and men manufacture home-carved totem poles and other curios. The sales brought nearly $4000, encouraging belief that the industry could be much further expanded locally.
