Smaller Ports Seek Parity In Subsidy Plans. Aberdeen To Urge Terminals On District Basis At Hearings Here, Tacoma And Portland. By E. J. DALBY. Post-Intelligencer Marine Editor. Ports other than Seattle, Tacoma and Portland at which hearings on essential trade routes in connection with ship subsidies will be held plan to be represented, according to W. J. Murphy, port manager at Aberdeen. Murphy, accompanied by representatives from other Washington seaboard cities, will attend the hearings scheduled at Portland, Tacoma and Seattle February 7, February 10 and February 14, respectively, to urge that districts, not specific ports, be named as terminals. PARITY SOUGHT. Under this plan, Murphy points out, smaller ports will receive the benefits of ship calls and rate parity that otherwise would not obtain. As an example, in Washington the districts of Puget Sound, Grays Harbor and Willapa Harbor are suggested, instead of either Seattle or Tacoma, or both. The local hearing will start at 10 a. m. in the Seattle Chamber of Commerce Auditorium, with T. M. Woodward of the United States maritime commission and examiners conducting the session. All interested are asked to attend. COAST GUARD CONTRACT LET. Contract for the overhaul of the coast guard cutter Alert, which bases at Ketchikan, has been let to the Lake Union Dry Dock and Machine Works at $4,500, it was announced yesterday by Seattle division headquarters. The Alert, which came south from Ketchikan late last week, will go on dry dock at once. The job is scheduled to be completed in about twenty days. Meanwhile the Cyane, also regularly berthed at the Southeastern Alaska port, will take over the double job of looking after the district.
