COUGARS POINT FOR GRIZZLIES W. S. C. Squad Is Being Driven Hard for Opening Battle Against Montana. THREE FULL ELEVENS Exendine Plans to Perfect Aerial Offense, With Koenig on Hurling Job. WASHINGTON STATE COLLEGE, PULLMAN, Sept. 26. – When Washington State meets Montana in the first football game of the season next Saturday at Missoula Coach A. A. Exendine will have three full crews from which to select a combination for the Grizzlies. The squad has been reduced from a total of 60 players to 42 hard-working men. The squad has been divided into two parts, with exendine and Assistant Coach Tom Whelan taking care of about two-thirds of the squad and Assistant Coach Roy Bohler handling the other third. The line has not developed a quite as fast as Exey would like. However, with a full week of practice ahead it is hoped that more speed will be intjected into the line and that its performance will be satisfactory. Four Sets of Backs. Four sets of backfields are drilling in hopes of landing regular berths. Herbert (Butch) Meeker is back calling signals after a few more days’ layoff with an injured knee. Eric Waldorf, big two-year letterman at fullback, was taken out of the game a couple of days ago with a bad knee. He is able to turn out for light work, but the injury has slowed him down some. Tom Whelan, who is being dubbed “Hurry-Up” Whelan by spectators who watch the practice, is driving his backs at a terrific rate. Speed is his by-word and there is no let up on it. Weight records show that the players, both backs and linemen, take off from two to five pounds in a daily three-hour turnout. The tackling dummies have recived a lot of abuse the last week and the bucking machine is hardly allowed to become cool. Intensive drill is also being given in “live” tackling, blocking and charging. Scrimmage has been under way daily nearly all week with three teams taking part. All practice is secret with the exception of Wednesday afternoon, when members of the student body are permitted to watch the workouts. Plan Aerial Offense. W. S. C. will present a strong aerial offense this year. Joe Koenig, Eskimo, passing ace of last year, is showing high-caliber passing both along the short and long routes.
