Recall Anniversary of Radio Triumph The letter "S" in Morse code repeated monotonously over and over again 36 years ago this month was the beginning of the transatlantic communication by radio. Three excited men stood on a cold, windy hillside in Newfoundland on this eventful day. One of them suddenly jerked a pair of headphones from his ears and handed them to the man next to him. In a voice full of anxiety and hope he asked, "Can you hear anything, Mr. Kemp?" The man speaking was the late Guglielmo Marconi. The sound he asked his assistant to hear, the revolutionary message he scarcely dared believe he had heard himself, consisted of nothing but three tiny clicks—a prearranged signal broadcast from Poldu, England.
