Army Planes Will Battle Over Seattle. Wartime Maneuvers Planned as Part of National Defense Week Observance in County Airplanes in wartime maneuvers over Seattle and troops defending the shoreline at Sheridan Beach were planned tentatively yesterday as two high spots of the Seattle- King County National Defense Week observance during the period from Lincoln's birthday, February 12, to Washington's birthday, February 22. The plans were outlined at a meeting of the executive committee in charge of the observance here, headed by Reserve Lieut. Robert E. Levy chairman. The meeting followed the regular weekly luncheon of the Reserve Officers Association, sponsors of the observance here, at the Arctic Club. COMMITTEE HEADS Levy announced that Reserve Lieut.-Col. David A. Maurier would be chairman in charge of the military demonstration. Other chairmen, all Reserve officers, as announced yesterday by Levy, are: Capt. Charles O. Carroll, committee for public patriotic luncheon; Capt. Thomas C. Kinney, committee for speaking engagements; Lieut. Joseph P. Adams, radio broadcast and "spots" committee, and Capt. Ralph Booth McAbee, church service committee. Chairmen for other phases of the observance have been announced previously, Levy said. BEACH ATTACK The mass military defense demonstration of the beach, as planned now, would be similar to the one held in 1935, according to Levy. Attacking parties, against which the army will defend the shore, will carry on from coast guard boats, he pointed out. "National Defense Week is not held for militaristic purposes, but to help the cause of preparedness," the chairman declared. "Its sponsors want peace, not war." Plans for a high school essay contest on national defense were discussed at the meeting. Subcommittee meetings will be held .daily until the actual observance. Next meeting of the committee chairmen will be held after the regular Tuesday luncheon of the association.
