Soviet Airmen Made Aviation History When They Flew Across North Pole to Vancouver This is the single-motored ship in which three soviet airmen flew from Moscow, Russia, over the north pole and landed Sunday at Vancouver Barracks, Wash. They had planned to go to Oakland, Cal., in their nonstop flight but weather conditions forced them to turn back from Eugene, Ore. The red-winged ship had covered 5300 miles in the nonstop flight when it landed in Vancouver. The flyers leave today for Oakland. (Chronicle-AP photo.)
