CARAVAN BLAZES TRAIL OVER STATE California-Bound Cavalcade Heads Southward BY DUANE HENNESSY Staff Writer, The Oregonian CORVALLIS, May 24 (Special)—California bound in carnival mood to help dedicate the great new Golden Gate bridge at San Francisco, the governor's cavalcade blazed a trail across the state today. Just after noon, the caravan set out from Portland with the Royal Rosarian band harmonizing "California, Here We Come." Police sirens wailed as the motor party, some 20 cars strong, wended its way through the streets of downtown Portland, crossed the Ross island bridge and then headed south on the superhighway. Snell Joins Caravan In Salem Secretary of State Earl Snell joined the caravan. In Albany it was Mayor C. R. Ashton and a party who added to the calvacade's length. At the city limits of Corvallis parade formation was resumed with Rosarian band leading the way in tuneful fashion. It was also in Corvallis that Governor and Mrs. Martin, waiting beside the highway, put their car into the ever-growing procession. Corvallis folk came out of their stores and homes as the band and wailing sirens told them that the governor's good-will delegation was on its way. Happy Spirit Prevails There was a happy spirit among the members as the cavalcade got under way. Booster spirit prevailed and it was clear that Oregon would get plenty of good advertising, both in a mass way and from individuals. Janet Sooysmith, queen of Oregon's 1936 Rose Festival, was the representative of the Festival. Zola Dell Lantis, pretty pirate girl from San Francisco, was the official hostess to escort the party south.
