Wheat And Pea Growers Benefit By Rain; Cherries And Berries Suffer (By the Associated Press) Rains generally over the northwest today assured wheat and pea growers of normal crops, but cherry and strawberry growers are threatened with severe losses unless the weather moderates. Government estimates of flood damage in British Columbia and Yukon territory exceeded $1,000,000 as a heat wave melted snows to cause more risers to rise to flood stages. Part of-Dawson was under water when the Yukon river overflowed. Alaska points reported unseasonable heat, with the Matanuska valley registering a 92-degree temperature. Cannery officials in the Puyallup valley said the strawberry crop is rotting because weather conditions prevent pickers from going into the fields. They said the crop may be saved if a sunny period follows, but that hot weather may cause blistering. Occasional showers and partly cloudy weather are forecast for Tuesday, with southerly winds and not much change in temperature. Cherries Damaged. Kendrick, June 8.—(AP)—The weekend rain which was hailed with thanks by pea and wheat ranchers of southeastern Washington caused grave misgivings among cherry growers of this region, who reported considerable cracking among cherries about ready for picking. Despite unfavorable weather, however, growers estimated better than 100 carloads, one of the largest crops in years. Berries Damaged. Everett, June 8.—(AP)—Heavy rains during the last few days have caused heavy damage to the strawberry crop in this district, G. P. Stuart, owner, of a large berry farm, said today Text Dawson Yukon river Alaska Yukon Washington State University: WSU Libraries Digital Collections Kendrick ENVELOPE(-156.667,-156.667,-86.367,-86.367) Yukon |
