Summary:CREW BATTLES WITH SEA LIONS. CREW BATTLES WITH SEA LOINS A battle with a herd of sea lions, which they said are destroying halibut on the Southwestern Alaska banks, was described today by Capt. George Ehler and the crew of the fishing schooner Chelsea, which arrived in Seattle today. "We encountered the sea lions off Chirikof Island, southwest of Kodiak Island, while fishing," said Captain Ehler. "There were quite a number of the fellows and they came near the Chelsea. We noticed that halibut in our catch had chunks bitten out of them and some of the fish were partly eaten. The only weapon we had was a shotgun and we used it in chasing the sea lions from the banks." The Chelsea brought a catch of 39,000 pounds of halibut, including 1,500 small, 1,000 large and 36,500 medium, which sold to the Washington Fish & Oyster Company at 9c and 7 1/4c a pound. The vessel carries a crew of eleven men. Other halibut vessel arrivals today were: Paragon, 33,500 pounds, including 6,500 small, 5,500 large, 500 gray and 21,000 medium, 2,000 sable fish, 9 1/2c, 6 1/2c and 4c a pound, to the New England Fish Company; and Faith, 5,500 pounds, including 2,200 small and 3,300 medium, 10 3/4c and 7c a pound, to Whiz Fish Products, Inc.
