NEW FISH ARE FOUND IN SURVEY OF STATE Conservation Bureau Seines Hybrids and Varieties Not Previously Known. ALBANY, Aug. 30.-The investigations in the lower Hudson region now being carried on by the Conservation Department Bureau of I Biological Survey are resulting an inventory of the fish resources of the streams, rivers, lakes ponds of this region. With about half of the territory to be covered completed, seventy-five different species of fish have been found. These include the familiar game and commercial fish such as trout, bass, pickerel, shad and eels. In addition, there are many others which are less well known because too small to be taken by anglers. The smaller kinds, such as the minnows, killifishes, darters, and sticklebacks are the food of the larger species and therefore come within the range of the study. Sample collections are taken with seines and gill nets in order to obtain information from each body of water. These collections include many unusual specimens. Two varieties of sunfishes not previously recorded from New York State have been noted. The young of shad, white perch, striped bass, anchovies and others constitute interesting finds. In several lakes it was discovered that the blue-gill and common sunfish, two distinct species, have interbred. Hybrid pickerel, a cross between the chain and banded pickerels, have also been taken.
