(AP)— Seven years ago 10 elk calves were sent from the Olympic peninsula of Washington state to start herds on Kodiak and Afognak islands of Alaska. Today it was revealed that elk on the islands now number 50 and are broad-backed and in excellent condition. They are the only herds in Alaska and are expected to eventually become a valuable source of native food supplies.
