When the 14 boats of the whaling fleet sailed away in May and when they returned in October they attracted attention, for although they are now "steam whalers" lacking the romance of the old sailing vessel period, they still go out around the Aleutian Islands and off Kodiak, where the great mammals of the sea are to be found. Whaling is carried on in both Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, not because the whale is primarily a cold water product but because it has been "fished out" in more available waters. Total figures for this year's catch on the Pacific coast to date amounted to 1019 whales, producing- 2,095,950 gallons of oil or approximately 42,000 barrels. Better prices for animal fat this year are due to a dearth of the product.
