Description
Summary:Alaska-Thermometer Goes Tropical Alaska—Thermometer Goes Tropical "Uncle Sam's Attic" experiences a heat wave. Seward's "Ice Box" is being defrosted. For the past 10 days unusually high temperatures have been recorded from interior to coast. Today, in the city of Seward, reports the Associated Press, "Sourdoughs," used to seeing temperature readings far below zero, saw the thin red line reach lOii—a record. Point Barrow, well within the arctic circle, on the Arctic Ocean, reported a reading of 44 degrees. Temperatures in the interior ranged in the 70's and 80's, and Fairbanks thermometers streaked to new highs at 85. Farmers welcomed the United States Weather Bureau prediction that the heat "may be prolonged for some time." Tourists planning a chilly trip north packed linen suits.
