Point Barrow Folk Prepare For Big Snow POINT BARROW FOLK PREPARE FOR BIG SNOW BARROW, Alaska, Oct. 24. (AP)—Eskimos mushed over 1 frozen tundra today rounding up their reindeer herds on Point Barrow. These cowboys of the Arctic will drive their herds to the government's new corral, which is nearly completed, 15 miles south of Barrow. Preliminary counts indicate that probably 15,000 deer will pass through the corral built to hold 200 a time. Chutes have been arranged similar to those in stockyards and the animals will be driven to these for counting, separation and branding. After the roundup, the herds will be released to forage on vegetation r der the snow. Coal $50 Per Ton. The natives faced a fuel shortage at Barrow because only one whale was killed this year. The blubber was needed for fuel and for dog food. With coal $50 a ton, a price beyond the natives, they have been digging frozen seepage oil from the surface of oil lakes 60 miles southeast of the settlement and hauling it back with dog teams. They have gathered 500 pounds so far. Several poor trapping seasons, poor markets and no income from reindeer meat or hides has created a serious problem.
