Alaska's Infant Death rate Far Above Average Alaska's Infant Death Rate Far Above Average KETCHIKAN, Alaska, Thursday, May 20.—(AP)—Alaska's maternal death rate, ten out of every 1.00C live births the past six years, is nearly twice the United States average, and its infant mortality rate nearly 160 out of each 1,000 births is three times higher than the national average, Dr. Sonia Chief- etz told interviewers here recently. She heads the division of material and child health in the Territorial Health Department. Doctor Chiefetz said the high mortality among Indians and Eskimos accounts for the high infant mortality rate, as segregated figures on white babies are about the same as in the United States.
