V. Ktelhorn of the coast guard cutter Chelan reported today, and a new north Pacific ocean depth of more than four miles has been found south of the Aleutian chain. The Chelan has returned from the annual summer Bering sea patrol. Commander Kielhom said the ocean survey work had proved there was no "gateway" south out of the Bering sea to the north Pacific. Last summer, the Chelan also discovered an immense undersea mountain range in the Bering sea. Alaska-Asia Tietip Found. "We found that instead of deep water lying between the Komandorski and Medini islands (off Kamchatka on the Siberian coast) and the westward end of the Aleutian chain, the water is shoal, tying Alaska to Asia," he said. "It proves the whole chain of islands is of the same geologic period and origin." A new ocean deep of 4,199 fathoms, was found in the "Aleutian trough," south of the Aleutian Islands, near the regular north Pacific steamship "The Chelan's work for the past two summers makes present Bering sea maps obsolete," he said.
