| Summary: | New Alaskan Survey To Be Made By Navy SURVEY TO BE y Six Small Vessels Will Precede Fleet in Northern Waters This Spring; to Sail in May WASHINGTON, Feb. 28.—(I.N. S.)—A new survey of Alaskan waters will be made by the navy in the spring in advance of the fleet maneuvers in that area, it was learned today. An expedition of six small naval warships will conduct the survey, which will include the Aleutian Islands. The purpose of the survey is to gather hydographic and aerological information for use of the fleet in I connection with the maneuvers. The expedition will be headed by Commander Francis C. Gogs- well, in command of the U. S. S. Oglala. The other vessels in the expedition will be the U. S. S, Quail, U. S. S. Tanager, tT. S. S. Kingfisher, U. S. S. Gannett and MT< S. S. Sandpiper. The expedition will fit out in West Coast ports and sail for Alaska early in May. This will be the second survey expedition sent to Alaska by the navy within the past year. Twelve naval seaplanes and six submarines went there on a training and survey cruise last summer. At that time Secretary of the Navy Swanson disclosed Alaska was under consideration as a possible naval base. The army also sent ten crack army bombers to Alaska last summer on photographic survey work.
