It is the once proud fur trading ship Baychimo, abandaned in 1931 when caught in the winter freeze- up. Apparently stationary, the Baychimo's two remaining masts could be seen through a spyglass from shore. The "ghost ship" is jammed twelve miles out in the sea of ice. Believing part of the Baychimo's rich cargo of furs and other wares may still be aboard, natives planned to board the ship.
