"Old Timers" Start Pilgrimage From Anchorage For Settlement. "Old Timers" Start Pilgrimage From Anchorage for Settlement. ANCHORAGE, Alaska, July 18.— Spurred on by actual evidence of government development that guarantees an early solution of many problems heretofore confronting the prospector, many men are again taking the field and on every train leaving Anchorage for the interior are a number of old-time prospectors and newcomers. Among the terra incognita that hardy men of the trails are endeavoring to conquer is the Mount McKin- ley country, where none but the most hardy and seasoned pioneer may penetrate. Mysterious finds that were abandoned when the war broke out have proved a lure to the old timers and this summer bids fair to see some old-time stampedes into the region. Some idea of the hazards to be braved in penetrating the country may be gained by the knowledge that it requires a trip of several hundred miles in winter with a dog team and supplies, the setting up of camp and laying up in the twilight in a country where the temperatures range around 65 degrees below zero, and braving the crevasses of the great glaciers and the torrential streams in summer. With the completion of the railroad now being constructed by the government it will be possible to take in supplies to nearby depots, when the prospectors will be able to keep food bases and extend their working season materially.
