SEATTLE, Wash., Nov. 11.—Use of water to thaw frozen ground in gold placer mining has recently been tried out 'with great success in the Candle region, Seward peninsula. The innovation was the discovery of 2. H. Miles, superintendent of the Alaska Mines corporation. A, description of the Mines method, as given by George H. Kilroy, just returned from Nome, states that the cold water is intrduced through small pipes into frozen placer ground is such a method that heat is extracted from it to thaw the ore. A Candle dredge which used the method during the last summer session, is said to have cut its cost of operation from 3 to 5 cents per cubic yard.
