Description
Summary:The Norse Hall, Helgeland Lodge #30, was organized 1934 and built in 1938. In 1948 the Norse Hall downstairs was filled with flood waters. The Puget Island water mains ran in the dike and residents noticed a water leak at the end of E. Birnie Slough Road and E. Sunny Sands. A request was made to the Army Corp of Engineers by the Diking District to make repairs and it was denied. A record breaking snow pack and then a quick spring thaw put pressure on the dike: coupled with the water leak, the dike broke. It took several weeks for the flood water to be pumped out before residents could move back onto Puget Island. An estimated 1 million dollars in damage was caused to Puget Island.
