The theme of the 2000 CIP conference will be "Water: the oil of the twenty-first century." As the organizers point out, "Oil, with its many facets of supply and demand, has driven the industrialized world of the twentieth century; water promises to be as critical a commodity in the twenty-first." David Orr's reflections on oil and water are offered here in the spirit of the conference theme, and as a bridge to our own concern with the millennium.
