Vitebsk Dvina Basin Region (Podvinye) During Roman Province Influence and in the Epoch of Great Migration of Peoples

The historic location of Vitebsk Podvinye over numerous thousands of years was connected with its position on the watershed. The region under study is a part of special geographic and cultural area, a kind of contact zone for various tribe groups of the early Iron Age and the early Middle Ages. The purpose of the article is a study of cultural and historical processes which took place in Vitebsk Podvinye in the 1st millennium A.D. Material and methods. The article is based on research materials in Vitebsk Podvinye in 2016–2020. Methods used both in historical and archeological studies were used: the comparative and historical, the typological, of historical reconstruction, the mapping etc. Findings and their discussion. The variety of cultural traditions, which is identified in the studied region, can be explained not only by the results of the natural progressive development of material culture but also can indicate a substantial role of Vitebsk Podvinye population in the history of migration processes. This role manifested itself most vividly when archeological cultures radically changed in the 3rd century A.D. which resulted in maturation of qualitatively new cultural communities. Conclusion. Materials which were obtained during the study of Vitebsk Podvinye settlements reflect migration processes in the north-eastern Belarus over the first millennium A.D. as well as the direction and the character of the interaction of various ethnic groups at different stages of their colonization. As a result of several waves of fore-Slav colonization of the Region polyethnic population with the dominance of the Slav component shaped here in the late first millennium A.D.
