The main character in this trilogy is a girl named Tora who lives with her stepfather and mother on a small island in northern Norway. The novels focus on the traumas that Tora experiences in the trilogy (sexual abuse, pregnancy, miscarriage), her national identity, and her relationship with her mother, aunt, and other characters. The main focus of this work is to answer a question – what kind of influence does gender, nationality and Tora's relationship with her mother have on Tora‘s identity formation? In order to answer this question, I will combine the method of naratological analysis and psychoanalytic knowledge of trauma and identity (trauma theory, Erik Erikson‘s eight stages of man theory, literary trauma theory and social identity theory). This method of analysis allows me to take a closer look at the structure of novels, figures of speech and the process of main character‘s identity formation. Different kinds of traumas that Tora experiences thorought the novels has the greatest impact on her identity formation. The shame, anger, and guilt that stems from these traumas prevent main character from forming her own, unique identity. Not only these traumas prevent main character from forming her own identity, but they lead her to madness at the end of the trilogy.
