This paper looks at the diachronic change of accents of two artists, Adele, who is from North London and speaks with a Cockney accent, and Alex Turner, the singer-songwriter from the band The Arctic Monkeys who is from Yorkshire and speaks with a Yorkshire accent. Simpson’s (1999) USA-5 model was adapted for the three accents under analysis: Cockney, Yorkshire and General American in order to observe if the native accents employed by each artist changed and adapted features of the General American accent. This study found that both Adele’s and Turner’s singing accents went through a change and adhered more to the American accent, while their spoken accents did not develop those features.
