Description
Summary:The Importance of Arctic Region in the Policy of North American Countries: Political Positions of the USA and Canada Andrius Bučinskas. The importance of Arctic region in the policy of North American countries. Political positions of the USA and Canada. Bachelor of Political science program. The International Relations and Political Science Institute, Vilnius. Research problem: because of glaciers, thick snow layer and humans not adopted climate, a long time, Arctic has been a real challenge to reach it, so it was attending attention just from explorers and scientists expeditions. Because of ongoing climate change, glaciers started melted very rapidly, so the teritory became more accessible to all applicants. The biggest interest in this area have USA and Canada. The object of the research: is the Arctic policy of Canada and United States. The aim of research: is to analyze Canada and USA pozitions in Arctic region, pros and cons. Tasks. In order to archieve the aim of this paper, two tasks were determined: 1. To analyze Canada and United States using their conducted internal and foreign policy, economic indicators and trends in order to show both countries places in the world power hierarchy and to compare their official states in Arctic policy; 2. Find the main points of disagreement between the US and Canadian policies in the area of the Arctic. The defendant statement/hypothesis of this paper is the US and Canada have different approaches to the Arctic zone, the disagreement between the two countries worsened relations. The geopolitical situation of the country has a direct connection with the available resources. Canada has a large amount of natural resources, and Canada is the second largest country in the world by the area. Canada has only one neighbor – the United States, which is a superpower. Althoungh the two neighbors has a friendly relationship, but when it comes to affairs of the Arctic, their position is very different, and tight against each other. Canada wants to maintain the existing areas, intelligently extracting the natural resources, the least possible harm to the environment and to preseerve the well-being of local residents. US only wants to keep the maritime border with Russia and pump out the natural resources. Since the United States and Canada have a number of problematic issues in the Arctic in respect of which there is disagreement between the both sides, it could affect further relations between both countries US and Canada.
