Summary: | Photograph taken at Kodiak. On verso of image: S.S. Bertha at Unalaska. The BERTHA operated under various owners all along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, from Alaska to Panama (p. 46, 84, 122, 202), and was even used as a floating hotel for miners at Cook Inlet, Alaska in 1914 (p. 258). She was destroyed by fire at Uyak Bay, Kodiak Island, in 1915 when water entered the forward hold and ignited a cargo of lime (p. 258). Notes from Gordon Newell, ed., The H.W.
