Summary: | "The BEAR, Photo by Lomen Bros. For more than sixty years the Cutter BEAR has been a picturesque symbol of the Far North. She has taken part in more spectacular historical events in Alaska than any other vessel. In the above photo the BEAR is shown as she arrived in Nome with that city's first water-borne mail of the year 1914. In other years she has transported reindeer from Siberia, missionaries, Eskimos, teachers and famous personages to and from the Arctic, rescued whalers, and taken part in two Antarctic expeditions of Admiral Richard Byrd. In October she delivered to Boston the captured Norwegian Coaster Busko, apprehended when about to establish radio stations on the coast of Greenland."
