Caption on image: LaPerouse Gla., Alaska PH Coll 247.432 With its almost perpendicular 200-300' face, La Perouse Glacier is an outstanding landmark along the Glacier Bay coast. It is unique along the North Pacific coast as the only glacier to reach the open ocean. (All other tidewater glaciers are in protected bays.) This is an active glacier: in some years, like 1997, advancing into the ocean, while just a year earlier receding enough to allow foot passage across the front at low tide.
