He was also director general of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. He was born in Monroe, Michigan. He studied law, but worked in the lumber business in Lincoln, Nebraska, before becoming involved in the railroad business. He was married to Flora Fonda with whom he had two children.
