Published by the Associated Cartoon Service. Artwork by Ernest Jenner. Captain David H. Jarvis (1862-1911) was born in Berlin, Maryland. In 1888, at age twenty-six, he was assigned to service in Alaskan and Arctic waters. He headed a relief expedition to rescue six whaling vessels that had been caught in the ice at Point Barrow. In this expedition he saved the lives of 275 men. The expedition concluded in 1898. In 1901, he won honor for valiantly standing his post during a smallpox epidemic in Nome Alaska. In 1902, he was made collector of customs for Alaska by President Theodore Roosevelt, who also recommended Jarvis to assist Northwestern Fisheries and the Northwestern Steamship Company with operations in Alaska. In this capacity he oversaw the investment of millions of dollars, the building of a great railway, the operation of a large fleet of vessels, and the development of large copper mines. In 1896, he married Ethel Taber with whom he had three children. Jarvis committed suicide on June 23, 1911, shooting himself in his room at the Seattle Athletic Club To order a reproduction, inquire about permissions, or for information about prices see: http://www.lib.washington.edu/specialcollections/services/reproduction/reproduction Please cite the Order Number Still Image Arctic Barrow Nome Point Barrow Alaska University of Washington, Seattle: Digital Collections Arctic Bushnell ENVELOPE(-150.800,-150.800,-85.600,-85.600) Jenner ENVELOPE(-62.550,-62.550,-64.433,-64.433) Theodore ENVELOPE(-62.450,-62.450,-64.933,-64.933)
