Published by the Associated Cartoon Service. Artwork by Edwin F. Brotze. Stephen S. Bailey (1845-1925) was a capitalist, politician, and hotel proprietor in Seattle. He owned the Hotel Northern, at 1st Ave between Yesler and Washington, from its construction in 1889 to 1902, when he sold it. He also at one time had interests in mining property and the Claussen Brewery. He previously resided in Spokane, at one time serving on the Spokane City Council, representing the Second Ward. He built a Yukon river steam ship named the S.S. Bailey in 1899, and later sold it. Bailey bet a large sum of money on Senator George Turner in the 1904 Washington gubernatorial election.
