Description
Summary:About the Piece: "Each spring the Harbor Seal gathers in fornt of glaciers like the Johns Hopkins Inlet Glacier in Glacier Bay, Alaska. The Tlingit ('The People') indigenous to Glacier Bay call the John Hopkins area in Glacier Bay their 'Food Locker.' Annually, the traveling Killer Whales visit the area for spring feeding on the young seals. Seal meat is also important winter food for the Tlingit who call Glacier Bay their homeland. Seal provides meat for food; the thick fat is rendered for oil to be used for storing food, cooking, seasoning, and as a sealant; the hide is used for clothing; and the bones for tools. Absolutely nothing was wasted in this 'Circle of Life.' This acrylic painting is done in the Northwest Coast Indian Art form line style representing more symbolism than realism." About the Artist: "KASHUDOHA (Wanda Loescher Culp), Chookeneidi (Eagle-Brown Bear Clan), descendant from Glacier Bay, Alaska; grandchild of Luk'naxadi (Raven-Coho Clan) of Lituya Bay on the outer coast near Yakutat. Born and raised in Juneau in 1948, KASHUDOHA moved to Hoonah (the home of the Chookeneidi) with her two daughters. She now lives between Hoonah, Excursion Inlet and Juneau. Drawing and painting since a child, KASHUDOHA started a business in art in 1996 determined to create quality Tlingit art that depicts the indigenous historic connection to this land in the past, present and future. Each piece gives a peek into the Tlingit history of S.E. Alaska." P.O. Box 51, Hoonah, Alaska 99829. Information provided by the Artist
