Description
Summary:PH Coll 246.226 [Meed journal: "In the Klondike he operated at Gold Hill with a partner on a profit-sharing arrangement. At the end of the summer season, while on the way to the "outside" with his wife, he was arrested at White Horse on a charge made up by his partner that he was absconding with more than his due share of the profits. He was escorted back to Dawson and put in jail. His wife meanwhile reached Seattle, and contacted my associate Captain James Ritchie who wrote to me asking my help for Severance. Under the circumstances it was not within my power to do very much then. . The case dragged along into midwinter. At that time with the North West Mounted Police in control, it was almost impossible for anyone to escape from the Yukon Territory. Severance was released from the jail on my personal recognisance and put in my custody, pending the outcome of his trial. In order to conform to this arrangement, I provided accommodation for him in my office at the Yukon Dock, where I also slept as usual. See photo of him no. 226 taken by me writing to his wife. . The case was eventually settled, the plaintiff was satisfied and Severance was free."] To order a reproduction, inquire about permissions, or for information about prices see: http://www.lib.washington.edu/specialcollections/services/reproduction/reproduction Please cite the Order Number
