The sailing schooner WAWONA was launched in 1897 at the Bendixsen shipyard in Fairhaven, California. The WAWONA was the largest three-masted schooner ever built on the west coast of North America . The ship originally carried lumber along the west coast but after 1914 was used as a fishing schooner. The WAWONA's cod-fishing crew of about 36 men spent six months of each year in the icy Bering Sea. To this day,the WAWONA holds the record for the most cod caught in a single fishing season.
