Summary: | In 1898, serious problems with claim jumping in Nome led to anger and violence. At this time, Nome had no civil government, and gold mining claims had to be registered in St. Michael, over 120 miles away. With the 1899 discovery of gold in Nome beach sand, a commissioner was appointed to register claims in Nome. The city's first government was set up at the same time. This photo, taken between 1899 and 1906, shows the log office building of the U.S. Commissioner in Nome.
